Unfortunately, I know this very well from personal experience.
Well, actually he was not my child. He was my stepbrother and I knew him from when he was an infant.
My father married his mother when I was a junior in high school.
He died at age 7 in 1980 after he was bitten by a mosquito and contracted viral encephalitis.
I had just finished my first year of college and I was spending the summer in an apartment off campus.
I still remember getting that phone call from my father and stepmother.
He was in the hospital clinging to life.
He died 10 days after he was bitten.
His name is David Andrew Morin and he owns a special place in my heart forever.
He actually still lives on inside of many people. It is important he was here and he will never be forgotten. My second son, Lucas carries his legacy with David as his middle name.
Loss like this cannot be compared to any other type of loss.
It changes people to the core.
Unfortunately, many parents have had to go through this experience.
What I have learned is “you never get over it” you learn to live with it.
You take the time to process your feelings. You take the time so you can start the healing process. It is a journey and always ongoing.
You give back to people who are currently going through it so you can show them you can rebuild.
This actually helps you to continue to rebuild too.
It isn’t easy and it takes a lot of time but it can happen.
I am so glad I was blessed to know David. He really is a very special angel.
